Hong Kong Part 2: Chair Porn at J Plus Hotel by Yoo
We love interesting boutique hotels with a bit of character and flavour. Much more fun than yet another generic hotel chain. For years, we’d been wanting to stay at Jia Hotel in Hong Kong. My hubby Alan runs his own interior design company and spends a good part of our holidays groping and knocking on hotel interiors, snapping pics, getting inspired. Yes, it’s an occupational hazard.
On our recent trip to Hong Kong, we discovered that Jia Hotel has now been renamed J Plus by Yoo and was recently refurbished. We booked it for the following reasons:
1. It’s conveniently located in the shopping haven of Causeway Bay. (We booked it before the Occupy Central protests started, before we knew it was going to be a big part of the protests. Ah well, it certainly made our trip more interesting.)
2. It was pretty reasonably priced, considering we went during China’s Golden Week when hotel prices were madness. We paid an average of $300 per night.
3. It comes with complimentary (though a tight selection) breakfast. More importantly, there was free flow of juice, coffee/tea and bottled water throughout the day. You don’t know how wonderful it feels to come ‘home’ to a nice glass of OJ. They also offer snacks during tea but we were never around to try them.
4. For those who travel light and want to do their laundry, they provide the washing machine FOC. We didn’t bother.
5. Chair porn!! They’ve got an awesome collection of sofas, chairs and generally, very interesting decor. We went mad with our chair model (aka my son Ayden) and got trigger happy. Behold this eclectic furniture fashion spread:
Our 380sq m Studio room is very generously sized, compared to the shoeboxes in most HK hotels. Comes with a queen size bed and day curtains (which we drew back) to separate the bedroom from the little living area.
Another view of bedroom with the curtain. There’s a writing desk where Hubby worked at (he was rushing a proposal) every night. Poor thing. But at least he had a comfy spot.Instead of the usual boring notepad, they had THIS! I brought it home, haha.Fancy marble-tiled toilet with nice toiletries from Noble Isle.Breakfast! The only problem is the dining area is one communal table and a few bar tables with stools. Guests have to spread out and plonk their butts on whatever sofa is available.Modest breakfast spread behind. Pastries, breads, cheese, yogurt, fresh fruit, hardboiled eggs… Good enough for us, actually. That’s basically all Ayden will eat at hotel buffets anyway. PS. That’s me chomping on his ear.
And now, the chair porn:
Love this pic. They both look knocked out from too much protest watching.Moooo…..Rickshaw uncle waiting for customers.Very sleek rocking chair, but it makes your butt cold.Quite a stately chair perfect for a King. Or Little Prince.Ayden gets all Zen-ish because he thinks this stool looks like a fat monk’s head. And he thinks this giant hand looks like something out of a kungfu movie. Dunno where he got that from. When the monk strikes out with his golden palm, maybe? Seriously, this fella has a crazy vivid imagination.Another shot with the golden hand. Now he’s not so sure about the kungfu thing.Amazing colourful sofa that is definitely a statement piece in any home. Good for parents with young kids cos now the food stains won’t show up, ha.Tired mama gets a ride home on the rickshaw.
Even their exit sign is cool.
Cute art work right under the exit sign. Oi, you’re running in the wrong direction!
Great experience, friendly staff and it definitely helps that they speak good English! Will stay there again.
