A crying baby. A growling dog. A scolding parent. A smooth politician rallying support. At any point in time, somebody, somewhere, is communicating a message. But do you know if you are doing it effectively?
Let Stellar Communications Consultancy lend you a listening ear (and a helping hand).
Meet Stella Thng: Writer, lecturer, author, all-rounded Curious Cat
Stellar Communications Consultancy is the mouthpiece of Stella Thng, a veteran mass communication practitioner with over 20 years of experience. A former magazine editor with MediaCorp Pte Ltd, she now runs her own editorial, branding and public relations firm while shaping the next generation of communicators as a lecturer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic and a former associate lecturer at Republic Polytechnic.
Stella’s natural curiousity about anything and everything is reflected in the wide range of magazines that she writes for. She is a food critic with 8Days magazine, a property and financial columnist at Home & Decor and dispenses parenting tips in Young Parents and Mother & Baby. (She practises what she preaches; she loves her food, is a keen property investor, and a long-suffering mum to her precocious son, Ayden Scott Leo.)
She contributes health and wellness features to Mount Alvernia Hospital’s My Alvernia magazine and Singapore Health. She has profiled Singapore’s movers and shakers for Singapore Tatler, gallivanted for Escape, mused over women’s issues for August Woman and featured gorgeous homes for Square Rooms.
Stella also has rich experience working on customised publishing titles to support local and international clients such as CapitaLand Investments (China), the National Heathcare Group, Singapore Tourism Board, Public Utilities Board, StarHub and more. She has written for, or edited, customised publishing titles such as Pure, Telescope, Natura, Lifewise, Duet, Kai De, Roam, Abuzz and more.
She provides copywriting for advertisements and corporate collaterals for clients such as Nestle, The Farrer Park Hospital, Frasers Centrepoint Malls, Jurong Mall, Alexandra Retail Centre, Sweetest Moments, and local and international property developers.
It is a vast and varied portfolio but amusingly, clients (especially those “of a certain age”) often remember her best for one thing — her decade-long work as Editor of the award-winning youth entertainment and lifestyle magazine, LIME (Singapore & Malaysia edition; now defunct) published by MediaCorp Pte Ltd. Stella’s business meetings often end with a client sheepishly confessing, “I read your articles in LIME when I was a teenager. Did you really meet Britney Spears/Justin Timberlake/Robbie Williams/Westlife/Tom Cruise?” (Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes.)
Founder of Cancer Warriors Project
The schmoozing-with-celebrities days were fun but what Stella is proudest of, however, is The Cancer Warriors Project (see here, here, here, here and here), which she founded in 2006 after the death of her sister, Sally, to Colorectal Cancer.
Stella is the author of the book Cancer Warriors and collaborated with some of Singapore’s best-known local musicians to put together a music CD. Proceeds ($80,000 in cash and in kind) benefited Singapore Cancer Society and Breast Cancer Foundation.
The Cancer Warriors Project was widely featured in local and foreign newspapers, magazines, websites, TV and radio, and was supported by official TV station, Ch 5, and official radio station, 987FM.
The book has won accolades from readers as far as Malaysia, Brunei, Japan, Shanghai and New York. Stella also received a personal letter from PM Lee Hsien Loong in support of the cause. (See Press release-Cancer Warriors]
Speaker at various youth and health events
Prior to becoming a lecturer, Stella had already honed her public speaking chops at various public events. Notable events include Singapore Youth & Media Conference 2006 (alongside Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, attended by students from Asia); Youth Marketing Forum 2006 (a regional annual forum attended by marketing professionals from Asia); Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Singapore Polytechnic’s career/graduation events’; ‘Campus On 938LIVE’ and FM98.7 radio shows; and public forums conducted by Great Eastern Life and Northern Hope Medical Specialists.
She was also invited to be part of the panel of *Scape. Along with other youth activists like Elim Chew from 77th Street, she was part of the pioneer team that helped to sculpt the plans and activities for *Scape.
